What the bid is for

Paul Smith’s College of Arts and Sciences, an equal opportunity employer, is accepting bids from qualified vendors to make capital improvements to the Paul Smith’s College Visitor Interpretive Center (the “Project”). The Project consists of installing door actuators tied to power-operated door controls to the public restrooms at the Visitor Interpretive Center.

This Project is funded in part by a grant from the Zoos, Botanical Gardens & Aquaria (ZBGA) Capital Grant Program, funded through an appropriation from the New York State Budget and administered by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP.

Scope

The Contractor shall furnish all labor, materials, equipment, tools, and services necessary to complete the installation of two pair of automatic door actuators at the Paul Smith’s College Visitor Interpretive Center (VIC), in accordance with the Contract Documents and all applicable codes and standards. Work shall include, at a minimum:

  • ADA & ANSI compliance: All physical installations must strictly comply with ICC A117.1, ADAAG, ANSI/BHMA A156.10 (for power-operated pedestrian doors), and ANSI/BHMA A156.19 (for low-energy power-operated doors).
  • Life Safety: Systems must be wired to fail-safe and release/unlock automatically upon activation of the building fire alarm system, complying with NFPA 101 (Life Safety Code) and local NY Building Codes.
  • Push Plate Specifications: Specify the required material and type (e.g., 6-inch round or 4.5-inch square, heavy-duty stainless steel, US32D finish, engraved with international symbol of accessibility and "Push to Open" text).
  • Mounting Requirements: Contractor must specify whether switches will be flush-mounted into storefront aluminum mullions or surface-mounted using commercial-grade weatherproof electrical back-boxes.
  • Wiring Standards: Use plenum-rated, low-voltage cabling (minimum 18 AWG, multi-conductor, shielded where necessary) run through concealed framing or dedicated conduit—no exposed wiring permitted.
  • Integration Requirements: Detail how the push plate must interface with existing building hardware (e.g., delay-relays to synchronize an electric strike lock to release before the automatic door motor engages).
  • AAADM Certified Testing: Contractor must perform a full safety inspection post-installation and provide a signed AAADM compliance certificate/sticker for each door.
  • Training of designated College facilities staff on operation and routine maintenance of the push plates, and delivery of complete operation and maintenance (O&M) manuals, warranties, and as-built documentation.

The Contractor is responsible for field-verifying all existing conditions affecting installation, coordinating work with College operations to minimize disruption to VIC activities, and always maintaining a clean and safe work area.
